Greetings on what turned out to be a beautiful Memorial Day. Thank you to the veterans and current troops that serve our country dutifully. They do not receive enough recognition for their brave actions and sacrifices.
I’m sorry that I haven’t written in a while. Since my last post a lot has happened in boxing and in my journalistic work. Canelo Alvarez destroyed James Kirkland in three rounds. I didn’t have time to write a post about the fight, but I made a quick prediction on Twitter two hours before the fight which turned out to be dead on.
Kirkland is a strong fighter, but I knew that Canelo was superior in terms of boxing skill. Kirkland’s future in boxing is severely limited. He reminds me a lot of Edison Miranda, who was once a rising star in the middleweight division who has since become a gatekeeper. Miranda’s lack of boxing skill finally caught up with him and I think the same is happening to Kirkland.
Several weeks ago I traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to interview WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder for several publications. I received my first tattoo with him too, but you will have to wait until the next issue of Urban Ink magazine comes out before you hear about the details. Sorry.
I will say that Deontay and his trainer, Jay Deas, are true gentlemen. I always enjoy being in their training camp. Deontay is hysterical. He is by far my favorite boxer to interview. He always has something interesting to say. He is a deep, down to earth guy.
I have some down time now, but I am working on a feature on Zab Judah’s boxing comeback and Adrian Broner. I will let you know more about those articles soon. Until then, enjoy the rest of this Memorial Day weekend.
