Last week I had the pleasure of visiting Sergey Kovalev and his team during their training camp. Kovalev has a big fight against Jean Pascal on Saturday, January 30. After observing Kovalev train and talking to him several times, I can tell you that he is more than prepared for this fight.
Kovalev is in top shape and feels like he is better prepared for this fight than he was when the two first met.
“I’m doing what I do every time for each fight,” said Kovalev. “For each fight I try to be responsible for 100 percent. Last fight against Pascal, my preparation was not 100 percent. I did [sic] some mistakes. I tried to put something new in my training camp. I brought some new people, some new exercise, but it wasn’t very good for me. Right now, I fixed this. This fight should be much more interesting, much clearer for my side.”
Kovalev is in great fighting condition. He always keeps himself in shape, but he looks like he’s dialed in for this fight. This bout is personal. He strongly dislikes Pascal. Pascal dismissed much of his team and is now working with Freddie Roach. Kovalev thinks this reflects badly on Pascal’s character.
“Where is his team right now? Everybody’s gone,” said Kovalev. “He throw [sic] away his team. They worked with him, they helped him. It’s his problem he didn’t win. He’s looking for who is guilty.”
I think that Kovalev will end this fight early. Look for Kovalev to KO Pascal in round four.
